These are the things I've learned during this unexpected unemployment:
What a hummingbird sounds like when it chirps. Not a slight, quiet peep as you might expect, but something metallic, sharp, and pronounced.
Where my dog's favorite scents are. Who was here? What are they about?
Which of our neighbors have pets. A fluffy black cat squished against a window, a fluffy white dog throwing its entire head back to bark a warning at us.
Which treat the crows love best. Walnuts seem to be the favorite so far, with shelled peanuts more of a begrudgingly accepted offering.
How lavender and pine mix together to create the greatest natural perfume after the rain.
How fire can glow bright white hot when it catches just so on a piece of paper held in a clay pot.
How quickly a day can slip past.
How the neighbors' chickens almost purr when you speak to them sweetly in passing.
How important art is.
How important love is.
How much people love to watch other people.
How much people need other people.
